Visit Corfu for a Traditional Easter Celebration

March 21st, 2011

Exchange Currency LogoWith Easter holidays approaching, people are looking for holiday inspiration. Why not add a little culture, and head to Greece to experience the traditional Easter orthodox celebrations?

Greek orthodox Easter celebrations are the ideal occasions to immerse your family in rich Greek culture and traditional Easter customs, while also enjoying the sunshine. One place to visit is the island of Corfu. The town holds a sombre Good Friday procession, concluded by turning on purple lights, giving the town a pretty purple glow in the evening. On Easter Saturday, Corfu citizens start the day by throwing large pots from the window to ward off evil spirits. The town also organizes a night of music and dancing where everyone is asked to light candles to bring in the good spirits.

As well as planning the location of your holiday, don't forget to plan your travel money. As the number of Euros you get for your pounds has been declining in March, make sure you search out the best exchange rate before you go. By looking at the different providers online you could save yourself enough money for an extra few glasses of wine or beer on your holiday, especially compared to buying Euros at the airport. So to see how many Euros you can get for your travel money budget, take a look at the exchange rates of some of the major currency exchange providers.

Tallin, the Cultural Capital of Europe

March 4th, 2011

Exchange Currency LogoThe arrival of the summer holidays for many people also means the arrival of a long awaited trip to the beautiful cities of Europe. This year, one location of interest at the Travel-money.org offices is Tallinn in Estonia. This year the city is not only celebrating its 20th anniversary of regaining independence from the Soviet Union, but also holding a year-long list of special cultural events following its appointment as the European Capital of Culture for 2011.

Tallinn, a world heritage site, has become a much more accessible and value-for-money destination for Britons with the arrival of budget flights from the UK to Tallinn. Estonia recently switched over to the Euro, and for the money saving traveller we advise using a Euro travel-money card for travel to the city. We prefer travel-money cards to travel money as they often give a much favourable exchange rate rather than exchanging money in the city or using a credit or debit card which often incurs high purchase and exchange fees. Travel money cards allow cardholders to pay for purchases and make online transactions in Euros. For example, snap up your tickets cultural events like the literary treasure hunt or the music festival and know exactly how much it costs you from day 1 (i.e. a ticket for 20 Euros will mean your card is debited by 20 Euros, and you know exactly how many Euros you have left on your card!).

Travel Light on a Late Valentine’s Day Getaway

February 22nd, 2011

Exchange Currency LogoHaving already visited Paris, Rome and Venice, often termed as ‘dream destinations’ for Valentine’s Day, this year, I wanted it to be different and special. I was on the lookout for a new romantic destination and Florence seemed to be the perfect city to visit. The next thing on my wish list was to avoid the mad Valentine’s Day crowd and to go easy on my budget, therefore I decided to plan a late and short getaway to Florence..

The perk of travelling to India during the World Cup is that you can visit some amazing places around the cricketing venues after or before the matches. The sheer diversity and contrasting cultures that you encounter is unbelievable. The country has some beautiful beaches, snow clad mountains, serene temples and some absolute awe-inspiring architecture.

Florence is considered a Tuscany masterpiece with its medieval charm, and old world glamour. The city’s historic churches and piazzas add to its old world glamour, while it’s numerous vineyards and groves of olives add to its scenic beauty. Since, I wanted to experience every essence of this medieval city; I decided to book a stay in a bed and breakfast (B&B). Not only do most B&Bs (which are quiet prominent in Florence) fit within your budget (they charge around € 99 and € 159per night), but most of them also allow you to book online.

I am also planning to get a travel card or a prepaid currency card rather than carry cash with me. Travel cards give me the feeling of security as then I don’t have to carry wads of cash and constantly worry about it. They also give users the privilege to spend directly as they are designed to be a cheap alternative to regular credit or debit cards by saving up to £40 on exchange rates without levying any commission charges, great for booking your hotel online as well! Travelling to India for the ICC World Cup

January 28th, 2011

Exchange Currency LogoEveryone is looking forward to the ICC Cricket World Cup, scheduled to take place in India, Sri Lanka, and Bangladesh from 19th February- to 2nd April. Firstly, it is actually a great time to visit a country like India since the climate in February and March is much cooler than the rest of the year. And secondly, watching cricket in India is a unique experience. For me watching cricket at Lords was the ultimate experience, but I was wrong. I had the privilege of watching a game at Eden Gardens in Kolkata a few years back, the atmosphere in the ground was simply electrifying. The noise of 100,000 people was absolutely deafening but then I could hear a pin drop when Sachin Tendulkar got out.

However, as you can’t buy Indian Rupees in the UK, I recommend using a prepaid currency card. I tried it on my last trip; though I was a bit sceptical about the whether these cards would work in India, I must admit it was quite effective. As you arrive, there are lots of money changers at the airport but then the rates offered are very poor. Having a pre-paid GBP currency card is really helpful in comparison, you can simply walk into any ATM and withdraw cash as required.

Most importantly these pre-paid cards are cheaper than credit/debit cards. ATM fees are zero for some of these cards while it is 2% of the total transaction for many UK debit cards. Exchange rates on prepaid cards vary, but for GBP cards it is usually between 1.5-2.5% of the total transaction amount, compared to 2.75-2.99% with debit or credit cards. When you travel to country like India there is always a temptation to shop for more since you are always close to striking a good deal for yourself. Being pre-paid cards these cards can go a long way in ensuring you do not over board with your shopping. It is advisable to carefully compare the cards before purchasing though, and compare foreign exchange rates and ATM fees to find the best provider for you.

Britons heading long haul for some winter sun

December,9th 2010

Exchange Currency LogoWith UK getting the first snowfall of this winter, many Britons are digging deep in their pockets to plan an escape to sunnier climates. Despite the rise in the Air Passenger Duty, long haul destinations like Sri Lanka and Jamaica offer great value to travellers looking for some winter sun.

The new Long Haul Report by Post Office revealed Sri Lanka, Mexico and Kenya as best value destinations for the winter sun holiday replacing Thailand at the top spot. The strengthening of the Thai Baht made holidaying in Phuket, Thailand 12.7% more expensive than last year. On the other hand, holiday purchases like a meal for 2 at a local restaurant in Sri Lanka (£25.00) including a bottle of wine was nine percent lower than in Thailand (£34.57) and over two-thirds less than in Australia (£116.88).

Among the mid haul destinations, Dubai came ahead of the traditional and popular option of Egypt, emerging as a cheaper option for UK travellers. With a three course evening meal for 2 at a local restaurant with a bottle of house wine costing £52.63, Dubai was 6.7 per cent cheaper than Egypt (£62.99). Across the Atlantic, Jamaica (£86.38) emerged as the best value destination amongst the Caribbean Islands surveyed.

With so many destinations to choose from, it is imperative to plan trips carefully with a well-established, ATOL-protected tour operator to protect you from any changes in circumstance. Buying currency online or relying on a prepaid Pound card instead of your UK bank cards for your foreign currency will help you get the best deals on travel money. How to avoid costly international money transfers

November 23rd, 2010

Exchange Currency LogoWhether you are transferring money to buy a home overseas or just need to transfer cash back home to the UK, many people choose to rely on their bank for transferring money overseas. But, did you know that a bit of research can help you find comparatively better options for sending money abroad helping you save each time you make a transfer?

Don’t assume that banks will give you the best deals for your international currency transfer. Besides the commission charged by the bank for remitting and receiving money on your behalf, the banks will generally use a pre-set exchange rate each day, leaving your money vulnerable to any fluctuations in the currency exchange market throughout the day. Money transfer specialists, however, offer a range of different foreign exchange products. As they specialise in transferring money between currencies they can offer much better exchange rates than a bank, thus saving you 2% and above in your exchange rate.

These specialist money transfer providers also offer various products – from one-off money transfers to regular payments. For example, you can either decide to transfer when the exchange rate hits a particular mark or set a money transfer date up to two years in future, to make sure the timing and value of the transfer meets your needs.

So, comparing the various money transfer providers before you send money abroad could potentially save hundreds of pounds with the right provider.

Eurozone ski resorts provide the best value for money this winter

October 25th, 2010

Exchange Currency LogoThe recently published survey by Post Office Travel Money and Where to Ski and Snowboard, revealed Italy’s Cervinia as the lowest priced leading resort and popular US destination of Vail as the most expensive of all the destinations surveyed for UK skiers this winter. Eastern European destinations, on the other hand, offered the best value budget resorts for UK skiers this winter. The research compared costs for lift passes, equipment hire and ski lessons together as well as meal and drinks prices in six world-class resorts and 12 mainstream budget resorts across Europe and North America.

Though Cervinia shares its ski area and famous mountain Gornergrat with Zermatt in Switzerland, they are far apart in terms of holiday costs. While Cervinia was the cheapest ski destination in Europe with total expense for skiing, meals and accommodation rounding up to £415.79, Zermatt was the most expensive destination with total expenses clocking in a whopping £563.91. A 50cl carafe of wine costs you £5.96 in Cervinia but would set you back by almost £15.17 across the mountain in Zermatt. A weak Franc made this skier paradise an expensive destination with £1 buying only CHF 1.5 as compared to CHF 2 in 2008.

The exchange rates played a key role this season with UK skiers getting 8% more cash in their pockets than last year. Though better exchange rates brought Europe within reach of many skiers, it also put a squeeze on ski trips across the Atlantic this winter. So as you logon to book your ski trip, a research for travel money could get you the best deals on your foreign exchange. Investing in a prepaid currency cards will ensure that your travel cash remains dry and handy as you ski down the mountain in Cervinia.

Crown Currency Exchange collapse detrimental to travellers

October 18th, 2010

Exchange Currency LogoThe recent collapse of Crown Currency Exchange (CCE), a foreign exchange firm, has shaken consumer confidence in the security of pre-ordering currency online. Holidaymakers, business travellers and those transferring money to buy a second home abroad have been left without as much as £100,000. According to the administrators MCR, it could be ‘up to six months’ before the consumers know about the return of an estimated £20 million.

However, experts are pessimistic about the chances of reimbursement as payments made by money transfers, cheques and cash – the preferred mode of currency purchase with Crown – are not regulated under consumer law.

So, should you stop buying currency online? Unforunately the collapse of one company has shaken consumer confidence when buying online, but Crown Currency Exchange followed a unique business model which ultimately led to their demise. Foreign currency providers do not follow CCE’s business model of ordering currency months in advance and hedging on the exchange rates. However, you can get great deals on your travel money when buying online saving yourself reasonable sums compared to the high street or airport.

Also, CCE was FSA registered, while many large foreign currency providers are actually regulated by Financial Services Authority (FSA). This means that the currency providers are required to keep the consumers’ money in ring-fenced accounts away from its creditors. Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act covers purchases made by a credit or debit card and safeguards customers in the case of a provider going bust. When you are transferring large amounts of money overseas, we recommend making sure your money transfer provider is FSA regulated.

So, the next time you buy currency online, a thorough research of all providers will help you avoid the risks and get the best deals on your travel money.
